movie review : Dr Strangelove

Thanks to Marine which made me watched last night Dr Strangelove as a part of our new remote weekly movie nights. Rules are simple, each Monday one of us need to announce on twitter which movie he consider as a part of his top 20 movie and we have 7 days to watch it and write a personal comment.

This week was Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb – 1964 from Stanley Kubrick. I was already a fan of the dark humour of Kubrick but this chef d’oeuvre turns my movie evening into a great piece of fun and laugh.

Putting things in perspective using the cold war as a plot for a dark humour satire in 1964 6 months after the assassination of Kennedy might not have been an easy thing, I wish someone tell me how it has been received by public.

To come back to the original point, the cast is wonderful and the real Dr Strangelove is endlessly funny at the end of the movie during the monologue on the future plan to save humanity. I have as well to mention the phone conversation between both Presidents which can be seen over and over and just keep make me laugh as the first time.

I ask anyone which like dark humour to see this movie which define the comic of situation as well as outline the real sense of comedy.

Finally I am thankful for the skills of Kubrick in playing chess which he used at many occasion to make a point with George C Scott to play his role the way we can admire him in.

  1. Such a huge movie !

I can’t explain the reason I like so deeply Dr Folamour, it’s just a complitation of insence situation. Started with the paranoiak captain who did not hesitate to shoot american soldiers to the pilote who made rodéo on the H Bob, evirithing is a pure masterpiece of dark humour and cynisme.

Kubrick is a irreverent director who did not hesitate to make a movie like that during Cold War. He attacked both american system and russian one. One of my best scene is when Mandrake ask colonel Bat Guanno to shoot the coca-cola machine. In this moment we can see all the genius of Kubrick who attacks directly american way of life and consumer society.

I would like to precise that Peter Sellers plays 3 parts in Dr Strangelove : The president, Mandrake and Folamour. Fantastic performance. And in particular for the part of Strangelove who try to burry his Nazy habits…

I don’t know how Kubrick did to make a movie like this. How could he imagine such situation and character ? A pure genius. The most tallentued director ever !
